Tip Of The Day Tuesdays "Is It Necessary to Cut Split Ends?"
One of the most frequently asked questions I hear is "Is it necessary to cut split ends?" Serums, conditioners or hair product can not repair split ends; The only true way to rid the hair of split ends is to trim them. Hair products can however help the hair look healthier temporarily until you are able to cut your split ends and certain hair products can help to prevent them from reoccurring. Some things to avoid that cause split ends are:
1. Combing or brushing the hair too rough. Try to use wide tooth combs to detangle your hair and always detangle your hair from the ends and work your way up to the roots.
2. Over-processing the hair with chemicals such as hair color, relaxers, and perms. It is never healthy to go over hair that has already been processed with same chemicals over and over again. This will make the hair dry, weak, fragile and result in breakage and thinning.
3. Chlorine from swimming pools is a chemical and strips the hair of its natural oils. Try wearing a swim cap and make sure to properly shampoo and condition after swimming. A hot oil treatment can also help to restore the luster to your hair. Read our article on the benefits of Coconut Oil for more information http://www.curlygirlswag.com/2014/08/3-benefits-of-using-coconut-oil-on-your.html.
4. Overuse of heat tools such as flat irons and curling irons can make the hair brittle. Make sure to always use a heat protectant when using heat styling tools and use a low heat setting when possible. You could also style your hair using hairstyles that do not need heat, or air dry your hair instead of blow-drying.
Although you can not repair split ends, utilizing these tips can help to avoid them in the future. Happy Hair Days;)

Why Are My Edges Thinning?
This is a question that is easier to ask than to answer. There could be many reasons as to why your edges or hairline are thinning. A common factor that causes hair thinning a lot of people don't realize is too much tension or stress on the hair follicles. This includes hair styles such as too tight ponytails, braids, or hair extensions. Also, using hair accessories that pull or snag the hair can cause thinning of the hairline over an extended period of time. Sometimes we are so involved with the way we want a style to look that we don't care about the adverse affects it my cause on our hair. For some people the hairline may become thinner over a long period of time or it may only take one incident of improper hair styling. Another factor that attributes to hair thinning is genetics. Alopecia Areata is a serious hair condition that causes bald spots. This is usually a hereditary trait and passed down from family members. Other things that can cause thinning of hair include certain medications, thyroid issues, and medical treatments such as chemo therapy. So, how can I grow my edges back? There are a lot of different natural oils and hair treatments that may help with thinning edges, but it is always best to first check with a dermatologist so that you can find out what has caused thinning to your hair. It is only then can it be determined what would be the best solution for treatment. If you notice you have thinning or bald edges you must also analyze your own personal hair care practices so that you can change your regimen and find the correct information to properly care for your hair. Are you suffering or do you know anybody with thinning or bald edges?

3 Benefits of Using Coconut Oil on Your Hair
Source:http://www.gnc.com/Nutiva-Organic-Extra-Virgin-Coconut-Oil/product.jsp?productId=11031952+ |
This post is for all my Curly Swag Diva's that have not yet indulged in the many benefits of coconut oil. First, coconut oil is one of the few oils that is able to penetrate the hair shaft. Unlike, other oils that mostly just coat the hair and leave a greasy feeling, coconut oil is beneficial to the hair shaft and acts as a protein to help with the strength and flexibility of your hair. Second, Coconut Oil can be used on the scalp to treat dandruff because of its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Third, coconut oil is a great moisturizer for your hair. Since Coconut Oil is not easily broken down it is great for sealing moisture into your hair to keep it hydrated.
To use coconut oil as a treatment, massage throughout your hair from scalp to ends and put on a plastic shower cap. You can leave it in the hair for 30 minutes, or you can sleep in it overnight and shampoo in the morning.
